Keeping track of Mitt Romney's Job Creation claims and history.

Mitt Romney in Massachusetts

Mitt Romney claims to have created more jobs as governor of Massachusetts (2003 to 2007) than Obama has as president (2009 until at least 2012). Technically it is true that Massachusetts saw a net gain in employment from 2003 tp 2007 (when the economy was growing) compared to the US economy has seen since Obama’s inauguration in 2009. Of course, Obama was inaugurated into an economy that was losing well over half a million jobs/month, so the comparison is a bit off base.

The question is; how did Massachusetts job creation look compare to other states during that time? Unfortunately, MA actually ranks 47th in terms of job growth for that time period. This started out as an attack by Democrats, and it appeared to be exaggerated. But Politifact found this "47th in the nation" to be true. They gave the claim by Democrats to be "half true" due to the assumed implication that the slow growth was Mitt Romney's fault.

To add insult to injury, post-Romney Massachusetts is well ahead of the pack, and is listed as one of the top 5 recovering states according to the Bloomberg Economic Evaluation of States Index. Further suggesting that this bolstered growth is due to a newer state administration, according to People’s World “Patrick supporters argue that the state's success in job creation has been strengthened by an administration that works in partnership with the federal government, especially the Obama administration. For example, money from the Obama stimulus program was used to build a highway off-ramp leading directly to the park.”
